Project collaboration: LIFE NatuReef and MAPA for protection of biogenic reefs
24/11/2025
The LIFE NatuReef project, focused on restoring native oyster and sabellaria reefs for coastal protection and marine biodiversity in Italy's Po Delta, offers a unique chance for coastal managers to replicate nature-based solutions addressing critical challenges like erosion and habitat loss. Our MAPA project pilot area around Ancona shares similar intriguing ecosystems like sabellaria reefs—making this an excellent opportunity for synergy between MAPA and LIFE NatuReef projects.
By engaging with LIFE NatuReef's tools and expert support, we can strengthen efforts to restore these valuable biogenic reefs, boosting biodiversity and protecting coastlines together. This non-binding opportunity targets public administrations, natural area managers, local authorities, research entities, and environmental organizations managing coastal sites threatened by subsidence, coastal erosion, flooding, habitat loss, and biodiversity decline - issues highly relevant to Adriatic marine conservation efforts like our MAPA project.
Participants gain free guidelines, tools, and expert support to adapt LIFE NatuReef's nature-based solutions, including submerged oyster reefs spanning 4,000 m² and sabellaria stimulation for erosion control and species enhancement. Successful applicants join the BIOGENICREEF committee for knowledge exchange and collaboration.
