Clean-up Action at the Neretva River Estuary

The Public Institution for the Management of Protected Areas of Nature of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County organized a waste clean-up action at the Neretva River Estuary on May 20, 2026.
The clean-up action was joined by residents and employees of the Prijatelj Association – a non-profit, non-governmental organization that carries out social and humanitarian activities and contributes to building a society in which persons with disabilities are treated with full respect and are equally included in work and the community.
Employees of the Public Institution introduced the participants to the project and application of the GREW project, the natural values of the special ornithological and ichthyological reserve of the Neretva Estuary, as well as the threats that waste can pose. During the clean-up action, participants collected large amounts of waste of anthropogenic origin, with plastic being the most common type of waste. Over the past 50 years, the use of plastic has become an indispensable part of our everyday lives, making many aspects of life easier, but at the same time creating serious problems for the environment.
