Smart Seas, Shared Solutions
How Italy and Croatia Are Driving Innovation in the Blue Economy.
In the Adriatic Sea, marine innovation is driving a new wave of sustainable development. Through the DIH InnovaMare project, researchers, entrepreneurs, and policymakers are joining forces to strengthen the region’s Blue Economy and accelerate its green and digital transition.
Defined by the European Commission as encompassing all economic activities linked to oceans, seas, and coasts, the Blue Economy connects traditional sectors—such as fisheries, aquaculture, maritime transport, and coastal tourism—with fast-growing fields including marine renewables, biotechnology, and digitalisation. Across the European Union, these industries support millions of jobs and generate significant economic value each year.
In Italy and Croatia, the Blue Economy is deeply embedded in local livelihoods, coastal development, and regional identity. Yet with increasing environmental pressures and climate challenges, innovation is no longer optional—it is essential. DIH InnovaMare positions the Adriatic as a living laboratory for sustainable solutions, fostering cross-border collaboration and shaping a more resilient future for marine ecosystems and coastal communities.
