Mesagne sets a new standard for sustainability with SECAP approval
18/01/2025
On December 30, 2024, the Municipality of Mesagne achieved a remarkable milestone in its commitment to environmental sustainability and climate resilience. Under the leadership of Mayor Antonio Matarrelli, the City Council officially approved the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP), signifying a bold step toward reducing pollutant emissions and aligning with the European Union’s ambitious environmental goals.
What is SECAP?
The Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP) is a strategic framework adopted by local authorities to tackle climate change and enhance energy efficiency. It includes measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy sustainability, and adapt to climate impacts, aligning local actions with EU environmental targets. By implementing a SECAP, municipalities commit to a comprehensive approach for building resilient and sustainable communities.
Driving positive change
The approval of the SECAP underscores Mesagne’s dedication to fostering sustainable development while addressing climate challenges at the local level. This comprehensive plan outlines strategic actions that Mesagne will implement to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, promote energy efficiency, and enhance climate resilience, contributing to the EU’s overarching goals of achieving a greener future.
Technical annexes: the blueprint for success
On the same day, the City Council approved technical annexes that are essential for the effective implementation of the SECAP. These annexes serve as a roadmap for the municipality, detailing specific measures, methodologies, and resources required to achieve the objectives outlined in the action plan. By adopting these technical documents, Mesagne ensures a practical and actionable framework for addressing sustainability challenges.
Empowered by the CO-MAY project
The realization of this significant achievement was made possible through the CO-MAY project. CO-MAY’s collaborative framework enabled Mesagne to develop and refine its SECAP with the input of experienced partners, ensuring that the plan reflects both local needs and global objectives. The project highlighted the importance of cross-border collaboration in addressing shared environmental challenges and showcased Mesagne’s role as a regional leader in sustainability initiatives.
Looking ahead
The Municipality of Mesagne has closed 2024 on a high note, demonstrating its unwavering commitment to sustainability. The SECAP approval is not just a plan - it’s a promise to future generations. Through continued collaboration within the CO-MAY project, Mesagne aims to implement impactful measures that will drive real change and create a thriving, environmentally responsible community.
