Living Square event: Revitalizing Urban Spaces in Labin

28/10/2024

On Friday, October 25, 2024, the City of Labin transformed Labinska Rudar Square into a vibrant pedestrian zone as part of the Living Square event.

This initiative, organized under the CO-MAY project, aimed to showcase innovative practices for creating sustainable urban environments while promoting community engagement.

From 10 a.m., the square buzzed with activities for children, students, and citizens: workshops, lectures, and exhibitions celebrated sustainability, energy efficiency, and circular resource management. Highlights of the day included:

  • Solar Power and Energy Communities: Visitors learned about solar power plants and energy communities, enjoying a complimentary cup of solar-brewed coffee with the mayor and deputy mayor in the City Lounge;
  • Eco-Friendly Workshops: Elementary students participated in hands-on activities, such as making bags from recycled plastic, crafting jewelry and toys from discarded materials, and bicycle repair;
  • Cultural and Fashion Displays: A fashion exchange featured items from the 50s to 90s, alongside accessories made from renewable materials;
  • Green Spaces and Local Delights: A green pop-up park offered a relaxing environment, complemented by the Martinčica mushroom growing association’s culinary creations, including spreads, pickled mushrooms, and specialty tinctures;
  • Educational Activities: The Helen Doron English School hosted workshops for kindergarteners, while high school electrical technicians presented on solar energy and community projects.

The event also celebrated community contributions with awards for the Edit Your Neighborhood competition, presented by the city company Labin 2000. This competition, like the event itself, encouraged practical approaches to sustainability and innovation.

The event was made possible by a collaboration between the City of Labin and several local organizations, to reclaim urban areas for people, turning a parking lot into a pedestrian-friendly space, exemplifing the city's commitment to sustainable mobility, energy efficiency, and the circular economy.
