Young minds meet marine science
26/01/2026
Science comes alive when students step into the lab. On 26 January 2026, high school students and professors from Rijeka Vocational School of Electrical Engineering and Crafts visit the Center for Marine Research in Rovinj. The four-hour study visit is part of the BRIGANTINE project activities. Researchers welcome them to show how new technologies help monitor and protect the marine environment. The aim is clear: inspire young people and raise awareness about marine conservation.
During the visit, the team presents the BRIGANTINE project and explains the role of the Center for Marine Research as a project partner . Researchers focus on the importance of developing innovative tools to better understand and monitor the sea . Special attention is given to new approaches for monitoring seagrass meadows, including sensors and autonomous devices . The visit ends with a hands-on workshop. Students actively work with sensors, collect marine environmental samples, and learn basic sample analysis . They also explore how real-time monitoring data are visualized and interpreted . The laboratory becomes a space of discovery, curiosity, and practical learning.
The Center for Marine Research, managed by Mirta Smodlaka Tankovic, is part of the Ruđer Bošković Institute, Croatia’s leading scientific research institution. The Institute promotes excellence in science and technology. Its mission is to conduct fundamental and applied research, support higher education, and contribute to sustainable development. Through international cooperation and innovation, it aims to advance knowledge and address global challenges, including environmental protection and marine sustainability.
