Cross-Border Expert Network Mobilised to Protect the Adriatic Marine Environment

27/03/2026

The BRAVE project has successfully operationalised its Adriatic Advisory Committee (AAC), a specialized cross-border network designed to guide technical activities and tackle pressing environmental challenges across the region.

To effectively address threats like biodiversity loss, climate change, and the spread of invasive alien species, the Adriatic requires a unified approach. Historically, fragmented environmental data and isolated national strategies have hindered effective decision-making. The establishment of the AAC directly answers this challenge by bringing together scientific experts and sectoral authorities from all participating Italian regions and Croatian coastal counties.

A Unified Approach to Marine Governance

Operating as a transnational advisory body, the Committee bridges the gap between scientific research and public policymaking. The AAC’s core responsibilities focus on:

  • Harmonising Data: Supporting the development of common methodologies for data collection and analysis across Italy and Croatia.
  • Strategic Planning: Contributing directly to key project outputs, including the forthcoming Joint Action Plan and regional management recommendations.
  • Sectoral Synergies: Strengthening collaboration with vital economic sectors, such as local fisheries and aquaculture networks, to ensure sustainable practices.

Driving Long-Term Resilience

The insights generated by the AAC will directly feed into the development of the project's Smart Digital Platform—a shared digital environment designed to provide policymakers and researchers with high-quality data visualisations for evidence-based governance. By structuring this cooperation from the outset, the project ensures that its environmental protection tools are practical, scalable, and built to last beyond the project's duration.
