Summer School 2026: Offshore Wind Farms – Technical and Ecological Aspects

07/05/2026

Within the Blue Economy sYnergies fOr sustaiNable Development (BEYOND) project, the Offshore Wind Farms Summer School is delivered through two interconnected programmes held in Rijeka and Trieste.

The programmes form a comprehensive educational pathway integrating technical and ecological perspectives of offshore wind energy development, with the aim of strengthening knowledge and skills for a sustainable blue economy.

Technical Aspects – Rijeka

The first programme, Summer School on Offshore Wind Farms – Technical Aspects, will take place at the Faculty of Engineering in Rijeka (RITEH – University of Rijeka) from 1–3 June 2026.

Organised by RITEH, the programme provides an intensive interdisciplinary introduction to offshore wind farms, focusing on technical, engineering, and industrial aspects of their development.

Participants will gain insights through expert lectures, panel discussions, and practical workshops covering planning, design, and operation of offshore energy systems.

Hands-on components include computer simulations, wind tunnel demonstrations, and 3D modelling, enabling the integration of theoretical knowledge with engineering practice.

The programme also includes a guided field visit to the Vrataruša wind farm, providing direct exposure to real operational systems and industry applications.

Participation is free of charge and open to students, researchers, professionals, and the general public.

Ecological Aspects – Trieste

The second programme is hosted by the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics (OGS) in Trieste, within the Blue Skills initiative.

Organised by OGS, it consists of two complementary modules:

MareSkill Programme

The Interreg project MareSkill – Smart and Innovative Blue Skills for Competitive Blue Economy focuses on aligning industry needs with educational and professional profiles in the blue economy sector.

It covers marine ecology, Marine Protected Areas, EU legislation, marine strategies, waste management, and sustainable marine resource governance.

Beyond Programme

The Interreg project Beyond – Blue Economy sYnergies fOr sustaiNable Development focuses on the natural, technical, and regulatory frameworks for offshore wind farms in the Adriatic Sea.

The Beyond Offshore Windfarms – Ecological Aspects programme addresses environmental impacts, including marine ecosystems, marine spatial planning, interactions with other blue economy sectors, and fisheries, supported by case studies.

The programmes in Rijeka and Trieste form an integrated educational framework combining technical and ecological perspectives on offshore wind energy.

This approach enables a comprehensive understanding of offshore energy systems across their entire lifecycle, from development and implementation to environmental impact and sustainability.
