Students clean-up in Korčula for Earth Day

In Rasohatica Bay on the island of Korčula, a clean-up action was held on Friday, 17 April 2026, ahead of Earth Day (22 April), aiming to contribute to environmental protection and raise awareness about responsible attitudes towards nature and the sea.

The action was organised by Petra Kanavelić Primary School in cooperation with LAG 5, as part of the school project “Our Blue Sea” and the international AWASTER project (Adopting WASTE as Resource), with support from local utility companies and the Korčula Tourist Board. Nearly 60 eighth-grade students took part.

The students cleaned Rasohatica Bay beaches and the access path, collecting and sorting waste in teams. More than 1,000 items of waste were collected, equivalent to nearly 1,000 litres, with plastic and polystyrene being the most common materials. The waste was properly removed and managed by municipal services after the action.

In addition to the clean-up activity, students also visited a recycling centre in Lumbarda, where they learned more about different types of waste, their environmental impact, and the importance of proper waste management.

Such activities contribute not only to the immediate improvement of coastal areas but also to the long-term preservation of marine ecosystems and the development of environmental awareness among young people, which is one of the key objectives of the AWASTER project and the promotion of the circular economy.
