Lumbarda Hosts Workshop on the Future of Adriatic Biodiversity

18/05/2026

On 12 May, the town of Lumbarda, on the island of Korčula, hosted a workshop dedicated to biodiversity protection, habitat conservation and ecosystem resilience in the Adriatic area.

The event brought together representatives of local institutions, environmental experts, organisations active in the territory and other actors involved in the protection of natural heritage. The meeting offered an opportunity to open a dialogue on how to better preserve Adriatic ecosystems and respond to the environmental challenges affecting coastal and island territories.

During the workshop, participants were introduced to the activities planned to develop a shared strategy for habitat conservation and species protection. Particular attention was given to the importance of cooperation between Croatian and Italian regions, which share common challenges related to biodiversity, climate change and the protection of marine and coastal ecosystems.

A central part of the workshop was dedicated to an open exchange of ideas, experiences and proposals. Participants discussed how actions addressing climate change can also contribute to biodiversity protection, underlining the need to consider climate and nature as closely connected priorities.

The discussion also focused on cooperation between regions and institutions. Participants stressed the importance of sharing good practices, improving biodiversity monitoring systems and strengthening coordination among the different authorities and organisations involved in nature protection.

Another key topic was the contribution that cross-border cooperation can offer to future biodiversity restoration plans. The need for joint planning and knowledge exchange was considered essential, especially when dealing with ecosystems that go beyond administrative and national borders.

The workshop represented an important opportunity to collect useful inputs from the territory and to involve local actors in the development of future joint actions. The contributions gathered during the event will support the preparation of the project strategy.

The active participation of attendees confirmed the importance of working together to preserve the natural heritage of the Adriatic area and to make coastal and island ecosystems more resilient to climate and environmental challenges.
