Every element on the beach has a role: ASPEH promotes responsible behaviour along the Adriatic coast
04/05/2026
A shell, a pebble, a handful of sand or a fragment washed ashore by the sea may seem like a small memory to take home after a day at the beach. In reality, every natural element found along the coast has a function within the ecosystem.
This is one of the key messages promoted within ASPEH project, working to improve the conservation of priority species and habitats in Adriatic coastal and marine areas.
Beaches are often perceived mainly as places for leisure and tourism. Yet they are dynamic natural environments, shaped by waves, wind, sediment movement and biological processes. Their balance depends also on the presence of natural materials such as shells, sand, pebbles, organic remains and seagrass deposits.
Removing these elements may appear harmless when done by a single visitor. However, when repeated over time and by many people, this behaviour can contribute to the impoverishment of coastal habitats and reduce their capacity to host biodiversity and protect the shoreline.
Empty shells, for example, can provide shelter for small marine organisms. Some species, such as hermit crabs, rely on available shells for protection. Organic remains also play a role in nutrient cycling, becoming part of the natural processes that sustain life along the coast.
Sand and pebbles are equally important. They are formed through long natural processes and contribute to the structure and stability of beaches. Their removal can affect sediment balance and increase the vulnerability of coastal areas to erosion.
Through its awareness-raising activities, ASPEH invites citizens, tourists, schools and local communities to look at the beach from a different perspective: not as a static landscape, but as a living system where each element contributes to ecological balance.
Protecting coastal biodiversity starts with simple actions. Leaving shells, sand, pebbles and natural materials where they belong helps preserve the beauty, resilience and ecological functions of Adriatic beaches.
Next time you visit the coast, take only memories — and leave nature where it is.
