The Management Consortium of Torre Guaceto strengthens community bonds through the ASPEH awareness campaign

29/10/2025

The Management Consortium of Torre Guaceto successfully concluded its awareness campaign at the Torre Guaceto Marine Protected Area, an initiative designed to strengthen the link between local communities and the natural heritage of the Adriatic coast.

The campaign aimed to promote knowledge, responsibility, and active participation in the protection of biodiversity, encouraging citizens and students to discover how education and awareness can translate into real action for sustainability.

Through a series of three open days held on October 12, 14, and 21, 2025, the Management Consortium of Torre Guaceto involved over 150 participants in guided visits, outdoor learning activities, and direct observation of protected habitats and species.

The first day, organized on 12th October to mark World Migratory Bird Day, was dedicated to citizens, who had the opportunity to explore the Reserve and better understand the delicate balance that characterizes coastal and marine ecosystems. This moment of shared learning highlighted the importance of community engagement in safeguarding natural areas, reinforcing the idea that everyone has a role to play in protecting the environment. The second open day, held on October 14 in celebration of the World Environmental Education Day, welcomed 75 students from the “Lanzilotti” and “Cavallo–Morelli” schools of the Municipality of Carovigno.

Guided by environmental educators, the students participated in interactive activities that combined play and discovery, learning how knowledge of local habitats can inspire respect and care for nature. The campaign concluded on 21th October with 68 students from the “Bozzano Centro” and “Santa Chiara” comprehensive institutes of the Municipality of Brindisi, who explored the Reserve through educational paths designed to foster curiosity, responsibility, and a sense of belonging to their territory.

Each of these experiences emphasized how environmental education is not just about learning facts, but about shaping values and behaviors that support a sustainable future. Throughout the campaign, the educators of the Management Consortium of Torre Guaceto accompanied participants on a journey through the landscapes of the Reserve, illustrating the richness of its biodiversity and explaining the importance of protecting its habitats, from dunes and wetlands to marine areas.

Their stories and explanations helped participants of all ages see the environment not only as a resource, but as a shared legacy that must be cared for and respected. The awareness campaign represented a concrete action in line with the broader objectives of the ASPEH project.

Beyond scientific goals, the project recognizes education and communication as essential tools to build long-term environmental responsibility within communities. The enthusiasm and participation of citizens, teachers, and students throughout these three days demonstrated how awareness, when combined with experience, becomes the first step toward change.

ASPEH awareness campaign has thus left a valuable legacy of knowledge, collaboration, and hope, reminding everyone that protecting biodiversity is a shared duty and an opportunity to build a greener, more conscious, and more sustainable Adriatic region.
