Crafting the ARCHAEODIGIT Methodology: A Journey of Heritage, Innovation, and Collaboration
Archaeological heritage is more than a collection of stones and ruins—it is the story of a place, its people, and its traditions. The ARCHAEODIGIT project set out to explore how these stories could be preserved, interpreted, and shared in harmony with modern touristic ecosystems. But the journey began not with tools or frameworks, but with conversations.
Partners from Italy and Croatia came together to exchange experiences, knowledge, and insights from their own heritage sites. These discussions covered a wide spectrum: the role of digitalization in heritage preservation, the use of interactive and immersive technologies to bring history to life, the integration of tangible and intangible heritage, and the connection between archaeological sites and their surrounding tourism landscapes. Beyond the technical and cultural dimensions, partners also considered the skills needed to manage these sites and the environmental impacts of archaeological tourism, ensuring sustainability was woven into every idea.
From these exchanges, a shared understanding emerged. Each partner contributed an Existing Situation Analysis, mapping out the current state of their sites, and together, we explored good practices from across Europe. These insights became the foundation for a methodology that is not only innovative but deeply grounded in the realities of the territories involved.
With this foundation, our teams developed a joint methodology, guided by three core ambitions. First, to manage archaeological areas responsibly, integrating them seamlessly with local tourism and governance frameworks. Second, to capture the unique cultural identity of each site, combining monuments, artifacts, local traditions, legends, and products into a holistic narrative. Third, to leverage digital technologies—interactive maps, immersive experiences, and digital storytelling—to make heritage accessible, engaging, and relevant for contemporary audiences.
The methodology grew organically through collaboration. Working groups across partners tested ideas, refined approaches, and ensured that the final product reflected both practical needs and creative innovation. It wasn’t just a document; it became a roadmap for preserving the past while opening it up to the present and future.
The ARCHAEODIGIT methodology represents more than technical guidance—it is a story of partnership, shared learning, and a common commitment to connecting people with heritage. It demonstrates how archaeological sites can become living spaces for culture, tourism, and community, bridging the gap between history and modern life.
Through this collaborative journey, we’ve shown that heritage management is not only about safeguarding the past—it is about creating meaningful experiences that inspire, educate, and connect.
