Project specific objectives

The ALIENA project aims to create a shared knowledge and joint monitoring system to protect biodiversity from Non-Indigenous Species. It focuses on identifying threatening NIS to marine ecosystems and socio-economic activities.

The project will develop early warning solutions for marine management and public health, aiding decision-makers. It also seeks to improve NIS detection, monitoring, and management protocols, and increase stakeholder awareness.

Project main outputs - Card

Project main outputs

  • Organization of a Transnational public event around month 18 in Puglia (IT);
  • Pilot observing campaigns (e.g chemical, biological, visual census) implemented in 4 different areas of the Adriatic basin;
  • Organization of a Summer School focused on NIS monitoring and forecasting systems in the Adriatic region, in the second project year.

About section

About

The ALIENA project recognizes the significant ecological and economic impacts of Non-indigenous Species (NIS) through habitat modification and biodiversity loss, particularly in the Adriatic Sea, a hub for fishing, tourism, and maritime traffic. The intensification of these activities increases the risk of NIS introduction. To address this, the project aims to establish a joint monitoring system to protect biodiversity and mitigate socio-economic impacts. Through identifying target NIS, conducting joint monitoring and modeling activities, and developing early warning solutions, the project seeks to enhance marine area management, biodiversity protection, and public health. It also aims to improve shared protocols for NIS detection, monitoring, and management while increasing stakeholder awareness, though a cross-boarder approach. Adopting a cross-border approach for NIS management, including data sharing and harmonized monitoring procedures, the results will enhance knowledge and the efficacy of public policies, particularly for species not yet monitored in some areas.
