About section

About

Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the Adriatic face a critical challenge: fragmented and manual surveillance data. Currently, there is no standardised way to track maritime infringements or evaluate the efficiency of judicial proceedings. This lack of transparency hinders effective coordination between port authorities and nature protection units. ADRIWATCH addresses these gaps by establishing a digitised, shared surveillance information system that harmonises data collection between Italy and Croatia.
The project introduces several innovations, including standardised reporting categories that connect field-level ranger reports with national databases. This ensures that data is not only accurate but also suitable for use in legal and enforcement processes. Beyond the technical platform, ADRIWATCH focuses on capacity building through cross-sectoral workshops and coaching for surveillance personnel. By engaging students in technical development, the project also fosters long-term local expertise in maritime digital solutions.
Cross-border cooperation is essential to create a shared understanding of maritime threats and enforcement standards. Without a unified regional platform, national efforts remain isolated. ADRIWATCH builds a transferable model for joint governance, ensuring that the Adriatic's most fragile marine ecosystems are protected by a transparent, professional, and highly coordinated surveillance network.
