Shaping the needs analysis for future cross-border tourism experiences

15/04/2026

AdriACTIVE is moving forward with an important phase dedicated to understanding how future tourism experiences can better respond to the needs, interests and expectations of visitors.

The work currently being carried out focuses on the analysis of local tourism resources, visitor profiles and potential target groups across the Italy–Croatia area. The aim is to support the development of tourism experiences that are sustainable, accessible, attractive and closely connected to the identity of each territory.

This process builds on information collected from the territories involved, including existing tourism data, current visitor profiles, planned local activities and available knowledge on tourism development. The first results show a strong commitment to enhancing cultural, natural and experiential tourism assets, while also encouraging a closer look at what visitors are actually looking for when choosing a destination or an experience.

A key element of this work is the visitor-centred approach. A route, attraction or local experience becomes truly valuable when it is not only meaningful for the territory, but also easy to access, understand and enjoy for tourists. For this reason, the activities are focusing on how local resources can be transformed into engaging and usable tourism experiences.

The analysis also considers different types of visitors, such as nature lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, slow cultural travellers, food and wine visitors, pilgrims and people interested in niche experiences. Understanding their motivations, travel habits, preferred activities and expectations is essential to design offers that are more coherent and attractive.

Another important aspect is the identification of possible barriers. Even valuable attractions may remain underused if they are difficult to reach, not sufficiently promoted, limited by seasonality, or not supported by adequate services. The work therefore looks at practical elements such as accessibility, transport connections, availability of information, opening times, booking options, weather conditions and nearby services.

Local stakeholders also play an important role in this phase. Tourism operators, accommodation providers, guides, tourist information offices and service providers can offer useful insights into visitor behaviour, expectations and emerging trends. Their contribution helps ensure that future activities are based on real knowledge of the territory and of its visitors.

Through this shared work, AdriACTIVE is laying the foundations for future tourism experiences that connect lesser-known destinations, cultural routes, natural landscapes and local communities across the Adriatic area.

The final goal is to support a more balanced and sustainable tourism model, able to promote slow, inclusive and experience-based tourism between Italy and Croatia, while creating new opportunities for local communities, operators and travellers.
