3EFISHING: Hybrid Propulsion Emerges as the Most Feasible Solution for Small Fishing Vessels

29/10/2026

The 3EFISHING project has completed a comparative analysis of alternative propulsion technologies for small-scale fishing and aquaculture vessels, identifying diesel-electric hybridisation as the most technically feasible and operationally balanced solution.

The findings are presented in the Report on the E-powered Solution Design (Deliverable D.1.1.1), developed by the University of Bologna as part of the project's research and engineering activities.

The study examines different propulsion technologies, including full electric systems, hydrogen, LNG, ammonia, methanol, biofuels and diesel-electric hybrid solutions. Each alternative is evaluated in terms of energy efficiency, environmental impact, technical compatibility, onboard space requirements and availability of refuelling or charging infrastructure.

The analysis focuses on two vessels operating in the Adriatic: the WBC40 catamaran used by Cromaris for aquaculture activities and the Calafuria 30 Fly provided by the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries (IOF).

The results highlight the limitations of several alternative technologies, particularly regarding battery capacity, onboard space and the lack of dedicated infrastructure in smaller Croatian ports.

Diesel-electric hybrid propulsion emerges as the most practical solution, combining the reliability and operational range of conventional diesel engines with the environmental benefits of electric propulsion during low-speed navigation and manoeuvring.

The study identifies a configuration featuring two 30 kW electric motors and a 120 kWh battery as a suitable technical solution. Further improvements in fuel consumption and emission reduction could be achieved by combining electrification with newer, more efficient diesel engines.

These findings provide a technical foundation for the next stages of the 3EFISHING project, supporting the development of more efficient and sustainable propulsion systems for small-scale fisheries and aquaculture in the Adriatic.
