Published on 04/08/2020 (last modified 04/08/2020)

The Museum of ancient sea – Nardò hosts important finds of the Roman age coming from archaeological researches – on land and underwater surveys and excavations along the Nardò coast.

Originally planned to conserve the remains of a Roman ship found off the  small village of S. Caterina, it was subsequently destined to a broader and more ambitious project: The landscape as museum. Archaeology of the Nardò coast, including a research program of maritime landscapes, aimed at reconstructing the process of evolution and settlement of the coastal stretch through the centuries, as well as the routes and the trade connections that touched it. The Museum itinerary includes various groups of finds, related to:
•    the work of the archaeologists on land and underwater
•    the storytelling of the site of Frascone, firstly occupied by a maritime mansion and subsequently by a little village of fishermen, mostly through the display and description of daily life objects and fishing gear;
•    the reconstruction of a cross section of the S. Caterina Roman ship with the original amphoras of the cargo, and the story of the success of the Salento wines exported in those amphoras all around the Mediterranean between 2nd and 1st century BC.
In the Museum you can find reconstructive scale models but also other objects recovered from the Nardò waters. The youngest visitors can enjoy an itinerary dedicated especially to them, the children’s museum, with drawings, reconstructions, didactic games for learning through play.
