Shaping the new tourist offer through the cross-border cooperation

Published on 15/07/2020 (last modified 16/09/2021)

Main goal of the project Revival is to revitalize and find a new purpose for neglected and abandoned sites in the Adriatic landscape – Italy and Croatia. One of those areas is the city of Zadar and its surroundings, that hides many military fortifications – bunkers from 20th century, that now have a great potential to become tourist attractions. Their importance was once again justified in the hard times of Homeland War, but now they can get a new purpose and become a big part of cultural life in Zadar area and therefore be saved from oblivion. How can this part of history and heritage be revitalized in the best way, revealed professor Rafaela Božić, project team leader from University of Zadar, in the first Revival interview.

Big part of industrial, military and cultural heritage in Adriatic area of Italy and Croatia is trapped in people’s minds and memories, despite strong physical presence of impressive sites and buildings that are enriching every landscape. This is especially the case with the city of Zadar and its surrounding, that hides many military fortifications, more precisely - bunkers from 20th century of all shapes and sizes, on land or underground, which still hasn’t got the right purpose after all those years. Because of their mostly preserved condition and safe infrastructure, they hide great potential, which can be realized exactly through the project Revival that wants to revitalize, reuse and rediscover that kind of sites and buildings. What is specifically planned for Zadar bunkers within Revival project and what do experts say about finding their new purpose, revealed professor Rafaela Božić, project team leader from University of Zadar.

- We don’t want the bunkers to be reused for war purposes, far from it, but we believe in importance of their history, which in recent years justified their existence with Homeland War. We believe that they deserve not to be forgotten and we want to give them a proper place in our history, because we believe that they are interesting for our residents from Zadar and the surrounding area, as well as for all the guests who come to Zadar – said Božić, noting that the process of revitalization is not happening only for tourism sake, but to shape real content for locals.

- When we started the project, when people heard what was happening, many of them began to approach us, happy and satisfied that something is being done with the bunkers, because many people from Zadar have their memories of these bunkers from very peaceful times, not only from Homeland War, since many spent their childhood playing by them. So, on the one hand, our wish is to give them a function in the cultural life of the city in more organised way, so that older bunkers can maybe become museums of Homeland War or defence architecture, while those who are bigger and now serve to young people for concerts and events, can keep that purpose – concluded Rafaela Božić, adding that there can be formed educational trail that will connect the bunkers which will be modified in more alternative, cultural way, for events like concerts and poetry evenings.
