The PRIZEFISH project idea builds on the rationale to implement a cross-border, territorial and socio-economic developmental change in the cooperative renewable exploitation of Adriatic fishery resources and consequently in the long-term benefits on the Adriatic marine ecosystems. PRIZEFISH builds on knowledge that were capitalized on abundant synergies with several previous and ongoing cooperation projects in the fishery sector its overall objective to tackle the dual territorial challenge for Italian and Croatian Adriatic fishing SMEs and Producer Organizations (POs) to be more sustainable and to increase their economic competitiveness in the seafood markets, by developing and piloting innovative fishery products with added-value given by ecolabels fulfilling requirements of environmental, economic and social sustainability.

The Institute for Biological Resources and Marine Biotechnologies (CNR- IRBIM) was founded in 1968 as the Marine Fisheries Research Institute (IRPEM), with scientific expertise related mainly to fisheries science of the Adriatic Sea. The most important areas of research are fisheries biology, mariculture and artificial reefs, population dynamics, physical and chemical oceanography, marine microbiology, marine geology, acoustics, naval technology and fishing gear technology.

The Polo dei Mestieri del Mare (PMM) is a next-generation schooling model in Italy. PMM aims to increase the professionalism of young workers and to ensure the highest competence in sea crafts, collaborating with many institutions in ambitious learning projects. Within 25 training modules, PMM educates operators in fishing, ecology providing them territory knowledge and transformation techniques, to raise awareness in the strong relationship between economic, environmental and social aspects.

The National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS) is an internationally oriented public research institution. OGS hosts the National Oceanographic Data Center for collecting marine data.

Fisherman’s Cooperative Omega3

The “Omega 3” Fishing Association was established in 2008 in the town of Kali on the Island of Ugljan famous for hundred-year fishing tradition. The primary occupation of the “Omega 3” is fishing for small pelagic fishes (sardines and anchovies). The catches of the “Omega 3” members has a significant share in total Croatian catches, where they participate with over 20% of the total national catch of small pelagic fishes. It gathers 16 associates and owns a fleet of 21 vessels.

Fishing Cooperative Istra

The Fishery Cooperative Istra, a leading fishermen cooperative in Istria, was funded in 2004 and has since then counts 50 active members and a few more subcontractors. Istra’s fishermen have a fleet of 56 boats and a centuries-old fishing tradition. Istra cooperates with the Centre for Cooperative Entrepreneurship, Fishing guild and local trade associations for promoting fishermen cooperation. In 2017, ISTRA is recognized as a producer organization (OPISTRA) of sole and oyster.

Organisation Producers of Bivalve Mollusc of the Veneto Sea (Adriatic Sea)

The Organisation of Producers BIVALVIA targets the Veneto natural stocks of sea clams (Venus, Chamelea Gallina) from the Adriatic Sea. The OP BIVALVIA particularly performs sustainable fishing applying a rotation basis across the fishing districts and conducts systemic quality controls with accredited analysis Institutes. OP BIVALVIA counts around one hundred Veneto fishing businesses, and it is a member of the Management Consortium and the Organisation of Producers of the Veneto Region.
