To provide passengers with the shelter from weather and with other services, two smart waiting stations were installed in the passenger terminal of Šibenik port, Croatia

Port of Šibenik area - passenger terminal Vrulje, has a cumulative quay length of 510 meters and projected capacity of 1 million passengers per year. For the purpose of informing the passengers, which includes raising the awareness of multimodal planning possibilities, Šibenik Port Authority installed two smart waiting stations for passengers in domestic maritime transport equipped with solar energy panels. In addition to providing shelter for the passengers in all weather conditions they have night LED lightning, possibility of charging mobile devices and tablets, free Wi-Fi and LED display with multimedia content and travel information.

These smart waiting stations directly affect the increase in passenger commodity and, at the same time, increase the passenger awareness and knowledge about destination and other useful information.

The investment strengthened the cooperation between local stakeholders and local island community. Residents of the surrounding islands, who travel on three regular ferry lines, have, on several occasions, expressed the need for this type of shelter. In addition, it is important for tourists who can find useful information related to the organization of travel during the tourist season, thus the content is offered in two languages: Croatian and English.

The entire process of implementing the stations started with the market research and investment preparation in the summer of 2020, followed by public procurement to find the best service/equipment provider. Small infrastructural works included the preparations of the concrete foundations and were finished by the end of 2020, and construction, placement and installation started immediately after. Then, the waiting stations were covered with solar panels that serve as a power source for the equipment: wooden benches, lighting, mobile phone and tablet chargers and screen. Finally, information boards about the project itself and the source of funding were placed on the waiting stations in early summer of 2021.
