Project MARLESS - Eco action of cleaning the seabed of the ferry port of Brestova, Region of Istria

Published on 30/06/2022 (last modified 30/06/2022)

In the action held on Sunday, June 26, 2022 at the location of the ferry port Brestova, organized by the Association of Underwater Activities DPA RABAC, IRENA - Istrian Regional Energy Agency and CIM - Center for Marine Research Ruđer Bošković, the biggest "catch" were the tires.

This location has already been included in the eco action on two occasions, and the last one was organized in 2021 by DPA Rabac under the auspices of the Kršan Tourist Board. On that occasion, a significant amount of small waste and one container full of large truck tires were removed from the sea. Even then, it was clear that actions of this type at this location would have to be repeated several times, in order for this type of waste to be extracted from the seabed. This year's action was carried out as part of the EU project MARLESS - MARine Litter cross-border awarenESS and innovation actions, funded through the Cross-border Cooperation Program Italy-Croatia 2014-2020, in which IRENA and CIM cooperate in the implementation of submarine cleaning actions at several locations. area of Istria County. In order to obtain comparative data on the origin of waste, actions of this type are carried out for the first time in Istria before and after the tourist season to obtain comparative data on the amount and type of marine waste, which accumulates at locations before and after the tourist season.

After cleaning the seabed of Guvnina bay in Medulin, the organization of the event Clean Adriatic Sea for future generations, which was held in parallel with the action of cleaning the seabed of the Port of Rovinj, Brestovo, was chosen because of its use and function - ferry port - different from the other two. As the aim of these actions is not only to clean the seabed but also to determine the different impacts of waste accumulation, it was important to detect locations that differ from each other in use and function.

The gathering on Brestova started at around 9 am, after which a briefing was held for the participants. Considering the previously performed surveys, the action is divided into two parts. One part of the participants focused on the action of lifting the tires with diving balloons and pulling them on the fishing boat. The second part of the participants was focused on the extraction of small waste, which was then delivered to the shore, after which it was loaded on a fishing boat and together with the tires delivered to the port of Plomin. Due to the dense timetable of the ferry and the large amount of tires found, the action of pulling out the tires had to be coordinated. Namely, after the departure of the ferry, seventeen divers had less than 45 minutes to lift 22 tires with balloons from a depth of 14-20 meters and, with the help of fishermen, load them onto the fishing boat. Nor, the fifteen divers cleaning the stretch along the waterfront had no less demanding task. Within 40 minutes, a 200-meter move had to be "combed" and the found waste was pulled ashore.

After all the collected waste was delivered to the port of Plomin, CIM started categorizing and listing the collected waste. We are transmitting their statement in its entirety: “In total, more than 3.5 tons of waste have been collected. Truck tires predominated, a total of 22 of which the largest was 160 cm in diameter and 65 cm wide. The share of small waste in the total weight is negligible, but the amount of found items is not - more than 275 items were analyzed in which glass items (bottles) predominated, and metal and plastic items also had a significant share. " The host of the action, DPA RABAC, was joined by members of diving clubs DPDSR POREČ, LOLIGO, RK RIJEKA and the trade for fishing and trade MORENO 07. The action, which was attended by almost 40 participants, covered almost 10,000 m2. IRENA reports: “Apart from being worthy of praise, by carrying out such actions, our goal is to raise awareness about the problem of marine litter. Our intention is to ensure a more lasting result by implementing these actions and defining measures, ie to contribute to the reduction of marine litter for the benefit of future generations. We thank all the participants and look forward to the action again in September. " Manuel Markovic, President of DPA RABCA, says: “The goal of the eco action is to clean the seabed and try to influence all people who love the sea and who are at sea or in the sea every day, and that waste is disposed of adequately and not by throwing it into the sea or nature. " The slogan of the campaign, in which IRENA and CIM launched numerous actions, first cleaning the beaches and then the seabed, summarizes the main goal, ie the message we strive to send, and that is all together for - "Clean Adriatic Sea for future generations".
