Project MARLESS: Educations with eco schools in Region of Istria

Published on 22/04/2022 (last modified 25/05/2022)

During April 2022, IRENA - Istrian Regional Energy Agency, as part of the MARLESS - MARINE Litter cross-border action of awareness and innovation, INTERREG VA Italy-Croatia 2014-2020, held an education on marine litter in primary schools with eco-status schools and last year applied for the Call for participation in project activities

The educations were attended by students:

  • Elementary schools Dr. Mate Demarina Medulin
  • Banjole Regional Schools
  • Matija Vlačić Elementary School Labin
  • Elementary schools of Vladimir Nazor Vrsar
  • Elementary schools Monte Zaro Pula
  • Elementary schools Kaštanjer Pula

In total, almost 300 students of different ages participated in the trainings.

Through the education, students learned what marine litter is, what microplastic pollution is, what are the causes of marine litter and how this pollution affects the environment, marine animals and humans. It has been shown that one of the global problems of today is the large amount of waste in the seas and oceans, primarily plastic waste.

The special emphasis of the education was how each person can at least partially influence the reduction of marine litter through responsible behavior. Students were shown how by properly selecting waste, reducing the use of disposable plastics, participating in cleaning actions and disseminating knowledge, they can contribute to solving this serious problem. As part of the training, the Animated educational video of the MARLESS project was also shown.

Education is only the first part of the activities with eco-schools that will be done through the MARLESS project. Students will also participate in beach cleaning campaigns and awareness campaigns. At the end of April and the beginning of May, four cleaning actions will be organized at different locations where students will collect waste, practice recycling and will be shown how to monitor marine litter. As part of the awareness raising campaign, students will create a variety of works that will later be used to promote further project events.
