ICARUS BIKE TOUR: TESTING THE TRANSNATIONAL MARITIME CORRIDOR

Published on 09/07/2021 (last modified 09/07/2021)

From 28th June till July 2nd a team of ICARUS partners tested the transnational maritime corridor analysed in the ICARUS case study perfromed by the Venice International university. During the bike tour, the cyclist had a chance to explore several transport means, test accomodation facilities and various services for cyclists.

The Venice International University (VIU) conducted a case study examining a transnational corridor along the north Adriatic axis, taking into consideration different transport means: bike, train, and ferry to travel from Italy to Croatia. To further back-up the results of the desk and market research, VIU decided to test the identified solutions and therefore highlight strengths and weaknesses along the defined corridor during a 7 days long bike tour.
The tour started on June 28th, 2021, in Venice and ended on July 3rd in Porec, Croatia. During the tour, our five brave cyclists (from VIU and the Institute for Transport and Logistics ITL) stopped in Jesolo, Caorle, Concordia Sagittaria, Portogruaro, Grado, Aquileia, Trieste, Pirano, Portorož, tried several transport means: two ferryboats, two motorboats and one bus and cycled a total of 342 km.
The tour provided VIU with useful information concerning cycling infrastructure, accommodation, touristic points of interests, integration of bicycle with other transport means, ticketing and cycling equipment. They investigated the current state of the cycling infrastructure, mapping black spots and bottlenecks.
Leaving besides the “technical” side of the tour, it is worth highlighting that more than any other transport mean, the bicycle offers the unique opportunity to enjoy the natural and cultural sceneries along the path. Indeed, during the tour, our partners enjoyed in the beauties of the Venetian Lagoon and the Litoranea Veneta, the Lower Piave Valley, an ancient marshy area between Eraclea and Caorle, the Livenza, Loncon and Lemene rivers, Portogruaro, the river port of the Serenissima. After Portogruaro, the path led them to Latisana following the beautiful towpath that runs alongside the Tagliamento River. In Marano Lagunare the team tested the motorboat and during the sail they managed to visit a fabulous fishing house “casone da pesca”. After the marvelous ruins of Aquileia, they reached Grado, in the homonymous lagoon.
On their way from Grado to Trieste, they visited Valle Cavanata nature reserve, River Isonzo and Timavo, enjoyed the beautiful coast and suggestive resorts like Duino, Sistiana, Miramare, and Barcola. With the motorboat from Trieste they reached the Parenzana cycle path, former railway, which carried them through hills and tunnels across the border into Slovenia to Koper, Izola, Piran and Portoroz. The last day of the tour took them to the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park, a magnificent landscape shaped by salt mining, a place where various types of birds nest. Through the section of the Parenzana road, they traveled through small villages and olive groves and reached the sea again in Novigrad and Poreč.
