Split-Dalmatia County strengthens wildfire preparedness with new civil protection equipment

13/02/2026

The HANDY Project is contributing to stronger cross-border civil protection and emergency preparedness in the Adriatic region. By promoting knowledge transfer, joint training activities, and closer cooperation among civil protection authorities, the project addresses several climate-related risks affecting the area, including forest fires, floods, oil spills, and earthquakes.

New equipment to support wildfire response

Within the framework of the project, Split-Dalmatia County has recently strengthened its operational capacity through the acquisition of specialised firefighting and emergency response equipment. The delivered equipment includes intervention gear, portable pumps, fire hoses, and personal protective equipment, all of which play a crucial role in supporting frontline responders during wildfire emergencies.

Additional equipment, including intervention suits and firefighting fittings, is expected to be delivered by June 2026, further enhancing the readiness and safety of operational teams ahead of future fire seasons.

Equipment testing and strengthening cross-border cooperation

To complement these investments, a cross-border firefighting exercise involving partners from Italy and Croatia is planned for March 2026. The exercise will provide an opportunity to test the newly procured equipment in a realistic operational setting while strengthening coordination and cooperation among participating civil protection authorities.

Through these activities, the HANDY Project continues to demonstrate the importance of European cooperation in disaster risk management, supporting more effective preparedness, response, and resilience for communities across the Adriatic region.
