Smart solar waste containers installed at the Port of Pula

11/07/2025

As part of the pilot activities under the CROSSCONNECT project, the Pula Port Authority has completed the installation of solar-powered smart waste containers, marking a concrete step toward enhancing sustainability and modernising waste management at the port.

The newly installed containers are positioned near the main port entrance to ensure maximum visibility and easy access for passengers, particularly cruise ship travellers preparing to embark. By encouraging responsible waste disposal at a key transition point, this pilot action combines functionality with a strong visual reminder of the importance of recycling and environmental care.

These high-performance containers are designed to operate autonomously, powered entirely by integrated 40W photovoltaic panels. The containers feature:

  • Automatic lid opening, enabling hands-free use;
  • An integrated press capable of compressing waste with a force sufficient to reduce volume by a factor of 1:6, significantly increasing overall capacity;
  • Real-time data tracking, including measurement of fill levels and communication with central systems;
  • An internal bin with a minimum capacity of 120 litres for the version with a press, and over 180 litres for the version without a press.

The smart containers also include GPS functionality supported by A-GPS technology, allowing remote monitoring and optimisation of collection routes.

This installation is part of a broader effort under the CROSSCONNECT pilot in Pula to reduce environmental impact, increase operational efficiency, and demonstrate innovative, scalable solutions for green port infrastructure. In the coming weeks, the pilot will continue with additional infrastructure upgrades, including the introduction of charging stations for electric vessels and new electric transport services for passengers.

The Pula Port Authority remains committed to supporting the transition toward smarter, cleaner, and more sustainable port environments, in line with the objectives of the Interreg Italy–Croatia Programme and the CROSSCONNECT project.
