CHANGE WE CARE participatory process meeting “Effects of climate change on the Neretva delta”

Published on 10/05/2021 (last modified 10/05/2021)

The first workshop of the CHANGE WE CARE participatory process related to the pilot site of the Neretva River Delta (Croatia) was held at the end of March, organized by the Partner Public Body for the Management of Protected Natural Areas of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County.

The Neretva Rivel Delta is suffering a number of issues related to climate change such sea water intrusion, reduced fresh water inflow, settlement of invasive species and loss of habitat suitable for agriculture and fishery. For these reasons there is an urgent need to activate measures for balancing the territorial development request with the necessary protection of natural resources and sensitive ecosystems. During the first meeting, a fruitful discussion has been opened with the representatives of local and educational institutions, research bodies, fisheries and agriculture sector and environmental associations about the strategies and interventions able to strengthen the resilience capacity of the Neretva system to climate change. The measures identified as the most urgent to be deepened during the next meetings essentially concern the need to guarantee a stable and continuous flow of water  in the Neretva river, to facilitate the filling of the aquifers, to favor the transition towards a biological agriculture, to reduce the fishing activity, to develop a more sustainable tourism and finally to increase the citizens' awareness toward the critical issues of the territory and the need to take protection actions.
