On 13th April, the final event of the Interreg CASCADE project (CoAStal and marine waters integrated monitoring systems for ecosystems proteCtion AnD managemEnt) will take place in Lecce at the “Officine Cantelmo” to share and present the project’s results to all interested parties.
The CASCADE project is financed by Cooperation Program Interreg V-A Italia-Croazia 2014/2020 and aims to the protection and the recovery of biodiversity in the marine and coastal environments both in Italy and Croatia. The project activities were addressed to the definition of extreme events effects on marine ecosystems, the development of both methodologies and restoration actions based on the scientific evidences, the monitoring systems development and improvement, the monitoring data access through an information system, the implementation of pilot actions tended to both the restoration and the improvement of integrated management systems.
The event closes a cycle of twelve events, organized by Apulia Regione as Lead Partner. Six events organized in presence in one of the pilot area of CASCADE Project, that is Torre Guaceto Nature Reserve and addressed to schools, which discovered the beauty and vulnerability of a precious ecosystem, understood the importance of preserving biodiversity, the devastating effects caused by human activities and by the presence of plastics. In addition, one events targeted to scuba divers, who explored the seabed of Torre Guaceto Protected Area among corals, scorpionfish, hermit crabs, octopuses, shrimps, lobsters, strafes, sea urchins, groupers and moray eels. Awareness-raising and networking activity has also involved citizens, professionals, local authorities, environmental associations in a cycle of five online events, such as workshops, scientific trainings, and seminars, which made it possible a debate between experts in the field and stakeholders on planning and integrated management actions for marine and coastal areas.
The Interreg CASCADE, within the broader strategy of Apulia Region, has achieved the important result of building and consolidating common intervention procedures to protect the sea by fostering the already ongoing collaborations, carrying out training activities, and promoting exchanges of innovative experiences for the conservation of the sea and its species.
