🌊 BRAVE Newsletter #4 is Online!
30/09/2026
The Adriatic Sea is more than a geographic boundary; it is a dynamic, interconnected ecosystem linking coastal communities, historic ports, and fragile marine environments across Italy and Croatia. Protecting this shared basin requires understanding these deep connections, recognizing their ecological and cultural value, and taking coordinated action for the future.
What’s Inside Issue #4?
Discovering Hidden Marine Biodiversity: The continuous need for systematic monitoring was underscored in August 2026, when scientists formally described Bispira causioi, a new species of tube-dwelling polychaete fan worm discovered along the Salento peninsula in southern Italy. This small biofilter organism highlights how much remains to be explored in Mediterranean waters. As climate change alters sea temperatures and regimes, identifying and tracking native species alongside potential invasive threats becomes increasingly urgent to safeguard local ecosystems before environmental shifts jeopardize their existence.
BRAVE in Action: Marano and Grado Lagoon Pilots: To address these challenges, BRAVE project partners are implementing targeted field actions. In the Marano and Grado Lagoon (Friuli Venezia Giulia Autonomous Region), partners recently mapped 72 kilometers of embankments across local valli da pesca (low-density aquaculture sites within the Natura 2000 network). By combining physical LiDAR and aerophotogrammetry metrics with environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling and ecological assessments, researchers are assessing structural risks, food web dynamics, and interactions between native species and invasive threats like the Blue Crab.
These field metrics directly feed into the shared BRAVE Smart Digital Platform, ensuring standardized datasets across both shores of the Adriatic to empower researchers, policymakers, and local fishers.
A Shared Heritage Across Liquid Bridges: The bond across the Adriatic extends beyond environmental science into cultural and culinary traditions. Historic "twin dishes", such as Italian Brodetto and Dalmatian Brudet, or Risotto al Nero di Seppia and Crni Rižot, reflect centuries of mutual trade and reliance on maritime resources. Just as these shared recipes weave Italian and Croatian traditions together, the BRAVE project connects both nations in a unified partnership to protect the marine resources that sustain coastal livelihoods.
Next Steps: Blue Labs and Co-Management
Looking ahead, BRAVE is rolling out Co-Management Blue Labs using a quadruple-helix approach (bringing together government, academia, industry, and citizens). Together with advanced eco-monitoring tools and nature-based solutions, these initiatives bridge the gap between scientific data and local action, paving the way for long-term resilience and sustainable marine governance across the Adriatic.
