Recap: The Blue Way Hackathon Aquaculture and Fisheries edition

22/12/2025

It’s been over a month since the Blue Way Hackathon 2025, and watching this video brings us right back to those intense 48 hours in Rimini — full of ideas, teamwork, late nights, and real passion for the future of fisheries and aquaculture.

One project that truly stood out was PANGEA, the first-place team, which proposed a bold and concrete solution for the aquaculture sector. By replacing traditional fishmeal with Single Cell Protein, produced from microorganisms and renewable substrates, the team tackled some of the sector’s biggest challenges: environmental impact, rising costs, and dependency on imported resources.

What made PANGEA special wasn’t just the technology, but the vision behind it — a circular, local, and scalable model developed by a young, multidisciplinary team ready to turn innovation into real impact.

The Blue Way Hackathon brought together students, researchers, entrepreneurs, and experts from Italy and Croatia, starting at Ecomondo and continuing aboard the Bella Rimini, which became a floating innovation lab for two unforgettable days. Along the way, we also saw inspiring ideas from RIBANET and TILAPIA, proving just how much potential there is in the next generation of blue economy innovators.

This video is a reminder that meaningful change often starts with a simple question, the right people around the table, and the courage to try something new. And for many of these teams, this is just the beginning.
