Water, Technology and the Future: Insights from Newsletter Issue 7
04/02/2026
Issue 7 of the newsletter provides an overview of key themes in public water infrastructure, the hidden water footprint of modern technologies, and concrete solutions for sustainable groundwater management. In an era of accelerating climate change and digitalization, water is increasingly emerging as a critical resource for the economy and everyday life.
It presents the long-standing experience of the Italian utility Acquedotto Pugliese, one of the largest water systems in Europe, which ensures a reliable water supply for millions of residents and, through advanced technologies, takes care of purification and environmental protection. The role of expert teams and continuous professional development is highlighted as the foundation for high‑quality and sustainable water resources management.
The newsletter also emphasizes the “hidden” water footprint of digital technologies: high water consumption in data centers, losses in water supply networks, and rising household water bills all show how important it is to plan infrastructure development and water use responsibly. It also features an international conference held in Rijeka which, with the participation of renowned experts from several countries, served as a key venue for exchanging the latest insights on Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) and for discussing innovative economic and governance approaches to the long‑term protection of groundwater.
