Newsletter #6 – Highlights and Upcoming Activities

17/12/2025

The 6th issue of the BLUE RECHARGE newsletter has been published, providing an overview of the latest activities, events and relevant European policies related to sustainable water resource management and the strengthening of aquifer resilience.

The central focus of this edition is the BLUE RECHARGE stakeholder workshop held on 14 November in Bari, at the headquarters of the Puglia Regional Government. The workshop brought together representatives of regional institutions, research organisations, universities and utility companies to exchange knowledge and experiences on the Blue Credits system and its adaptation to the Mediterranean context. Key project components were presented, including the blockchain-based digital platform, case studies in Italy and Croatia, and early results from the development and testing of the Blue Credits model.

The newsletter also features a summary of the expert roundtable, which addressed topics such as Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR), water reuse, innovative water management models, the blue economy and climate-resilient infrastructure, while highlighting links with relevant Interreg initiatives at EU level.

In the News section, attention is given to the new European Water Resilience Strategy, adopted on 4 June 2025, with a focus on the role of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and innovative solutions such as precision agriculture, IoT sensors and artificial intelligence in strengthening the resilience of rural areas. The first meeting of the EU CAP Network Thematic Group dedicated to improving water resilience in rural areas, held in September, is also presented, showcasing good practices and key implementation challenges across Member States.

The newsletter concludes with the announcement of the business roundtable “Water as a Resource of the Future”, which will take place on 22 December 2025 in Vodnjan–Dignano. The event will focus on the role of businesses in future water management, the presentation of the Blue Credits model, and opportunities for the private sector to engage in the project’s pilot activities.
