AdSWiM guided visit for students to the Fano treatment plant with the Polytechnic University of Marche

Published on 16/08/2021 (last modified 28/10/2021)

Educational guided visit at the Fano treatment plant for 40 students of the three-year and master's degree courses in Environmental Sciences of the Polytechnic University of Marche (Università Politecnica delle MarcheAdswim Univpm) was held on October 21, 2021.

The students were led during the visit by professors Anna Annibaldi and Francesca Beolchini, as well as by the engineers in charge of the management of the treatment plant.

The visit aimed at understanding the importance of purification processes, the structure of the plant and how do the removal of dirt, organic matter, contaminants and pathogenic microorganisms from domestic waters happen, before they are discarded into surface water bodies or directly to the sea.

In photos attached, some components and processes of the plant can be observed.

Finally, we have returned to the field activities with students involved as protagonists in the water management cycle. Best compliments and great achievement of our partner in the Marche Region!

The Department of Life and Environmental Sciences (DiSVA) is a University structure of excellence that was born in 2011 from the merger of numerous laboratories involved in a wide range of theoretical and applied research topics. Linked to the environment and the marine ecosystem, it sees the participation of over 100 scientists and technicians with highly interdisciplinary skills. AdSWiM involves the Environmental Analytical Chemistry group that evaluates the quality of coastal and marine ecosystems and propose innovative descriptors and new reference models. The researchers have been measuring the level of nutrients and trace elements in sea water for about three years to assess the pollution of the Adriatic. Their experience in statistical analysis helps identifying multiple environmental stressors that affect the variability of those ecosystems.
