The welfare of farmed fish has great bioethical, biological and economic importance for farms. Measuring the degree of animal welfare is essential for the proper management of a company. Both Operational Welfare Indicators (OWIs) and Laboratory Welfare Indicators (LWIs) can be used. Researchers from the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of the Venezie and the project’s partner companies have developed a practical data sheet with 25 indicators based on the fishes’ external appearance and behaviour. This monitoring provides a final score in a few hours even on large fish farms. Researchers from the University of Trieste have developed a new method for analyzing some stress indicators in fish blood micro-samples. The method is accurate and very simple to apply, even in the field.
