"A measure of the sea" – AdriaClim project in focus for the protection of the sea area

Published on 17/11/2021 (last modified 17/11/2021)

The fifth appointment of the series of meetings "A Misura di mare" , organized by Arpa FVG in collaboration with the Port System Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea, was held on 27th September 2021. Along with other  European Projects in the upper Adriatic, AdriaClim project was presented and was in the focus of the event.

The Arpa FVG technicians involved in various European Projects illustrated the objectives, developments, potentials and the latest news in the various sectors. Also present was the Regional Councilor for the Environment and Rear Admiral Vincenzo Vitale of the Harbor Master's Office who highlighted the problems related to the management of emergencies in a territory like ours, where there are several neighboring States, underlining the importance of creating stable collaborations and effective.

Participation in international cooperation projects proposed by the European community represent an opportunity and a primary source of funding for technical-scientific bodies, including public administrations. In addition to providing an adequate financial endowment , they make it possible as a priority to start stable collaborations between partners, which often continue beyond the deadline of the projects themselves.

In this context, Arpa has joined numerous projects relating to the Interreg Italy-Croatia Program that have the Adriatic Sea at the center, a basin rich in various aspects: for the biodiversity of marine ecosystems, for trade, for tourism and for the fishing activity. In this area, cross-border collaboration therefore becomes fundamental for the protection of aquatic species and the conservation of marine habitats.

The Interreg Italy-Croatia Program is the tool to support cooperation between the two territories. The entire area of the program covers a total of 85,562 km 2 ; the total budget of € 236.8 million allows regional and local stakeholders to exchange knowledge and experiences, develop and implement products and services, support investments through the creation of new business models, test the feasibility of new policies with the aim of lastly, the improvement of the quality and living conditions of citizens residing in the area.

AdriaClim project is among 6 projects that Arpa Friuli Venezia Giulia has joined which make it possible to obtain approximately  € 1.8 million over the period 2019-2022 to be allocated to the purchase of sophisticated monitoring equipment and the acquisition of specialized technicians to develop the ambitious projects scheduled.

Adriaclim - Climate change and future scenarios

Threats caused by climate change and their possible consequences were presented in the first volume of the 6th Assessment Report of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change ) in 2021. The report proposes an analysis of how and why the climate has changed and how it will change in the future, depending on the choices we will make in recent years.

The Adriaclim project aims to analyze and model the evolution of climate change in the Adriatic Sea and along its coasts to produce useful information for the drafting of adaptation plans to local impacts of global climate change.

Arpa is perfecting a high-definition oceanographic model to simulate the state, past and future, of the Gulf of Trieste and, a novelty in this field, of the Marano-Grado Lagoon. The simulation concerns the physical characteristics of the sea and the lagoon: currents, temperature and salinity. This will allow us to predict possible future scenarios, thus evaluating the impacts of climate change in Friuli Venezia Giulia.
