Event in Ploče Highlights Commitment to Aquatic Ecosystem Protection

A special event dedicated to the protection of marine and freshwater ecosystems successfully concluded in Ploče, bringing together divers, citizens, experts, and students for a series of practical activities and educational sessions.
The initiative focused on seabed conservation, waste management, and invasive species control through an integrated approach combining science, awareness, and direct action.
Key activities included environmental monitoring through sediment sampling in various coastal areas, a large-scale clean-up action at the Neretva River estuary, and educational workshops for children. Special attention was given to raising awareness about the challenges posed by invasive species such as the blue crab and zebra mussel. These issues were addressed during a public conference featuring expert speakers and a cooking demonstration showcasing sustainable culinary uses of these species.
The event also provided an opportunity to explore nature-based solutions (NBS) applied to lake conservation and water resource management, with guided tours and discussions among project partners.
The initiative demonstrated how collaboration between local communities, institutions, and scientific professionals can make a tangible contribution to environmental protection and the promotion of sustainable development in the region.
