The Projects’ Story-collection is underlining the role of EU funds (ERDF) in supporting of the protection of natural heritage, of habitat and protected areas, with a focus on preserving and restoring biodiversity in the extensive Programme cross-border area of the Adriatic basin.
The Adriatic Sea is the northernmost basin of the Mediterranean Sea, stretching around 800 km from the north to the south, and never exceeding 200 km across. Despite its relatively small size of 138 600 km2, it has an important role in the wider Mediterranean region due to its rich biodiversity, diverse geology and complex circulation patterns. For example, almost a 1/3 of all freshwater flow into Mediterranean comes through the Adriatic Sea, which exchanges its entire volume within three to four years – a strikingly short period. In the Adriatic Sea more than 7000 species have been recorded many of them rare, endemic or endangered. Two third of commercially important species are today considered overfished.
Our projects are developing initiatives and concrete actions to maintain and restore the marine and coastal areas’ ecosystem and environmental heritage, building joint solutions starting from the shared resources.
Together we save our planet better. With Interreg we can!
